The name “Kush” comes from the name of the Hindu-Kush mountain range in Asia, which is located west of the Himalayas. It is more than 1,000 kilometres long and covers the territory of many countries: Afghanistan, Pakistan, China, Tajikistan, India, Turkestan and others, where this indica-dominant variety has been cultivated for thousands of years.
Strains of ‘Hindu Kush’ cannabis were introduced to the USA and Europe during the 1960s and early 1970s.
It was during these years that the famous writer, one of the world’s first hippies, Jack Kerouac, wrote his first book “The Road”, where he began to write about his “trips” to find cannabis, which contributed greatly to the public interest in the product. Shortly after, a new project was born: “The Magic Bus”. The Magic Bus, a travel agency based in Amsterdam, started to send buses from Amsterdam overland to India and Nepal. In order to reach India, the Magic Bus had to cross many countries and especially the Hindu Kush. At the same time a rival company, the ‘Budget Bus’, appeared, starting from London on a direct route to Delhi and offering a longer journey via Lebanon, Afghanistan, Kashmir and on to Nepal for £45. Lebanon, Afghanistan and Kashmir are countries considered to produce the best hashish (trichomes of feminized cannabis plants) in the world, and Nepal is a producer of charas (a mixture of trichomes of different feminized plants, hand-pulled from the flowers of feminized plants). Examples of products can be Red Lebanese, Afghani Black, Kashmiri Twists, Nepalese Temple Balls.
Kush are sweet-smelling varieties that are part of the Cannabis Indica family, which means they are low, stocky plants with a short flowering period and large, fleshy and glossy leaves. The flowers are very compact and full of sticky resin.
They are perfectly adapted to their place of origin. They tolerate drought very well, thriving in all kinds of adverse weather, except for high humidity, which is not good for them. They endure equally hot days followed by cool nights.
Terpenes, which dominate in the so-called. “Kush” varieties:
Caryophyllene (black cumin, cloves, hops, basil, oregano, black pepper, lavender, rosemary, cinnamon, Kannaga fragrance, Copaiba tree oil)
Humulene (pine, tobacco, sage, clove, basil, ginseng, ginger, black pepper)
